ABOUT CASTLEMAINE AND MOUNT ALEXANDER SHIRE

Castlemaine is a city of 8,000 people, the main hub of Mount Alexander Shire in regional Victoria.   Always known as a leading arts centre, over the last couple of years Castlemaine has recently taken centre stage tackling greenhouse issues.  With a strong national reputation now for its environmental commitments as well as its creative artistic talents, and a growing number of innovative projects in community strengthening, Mount Alexander Shire is working to create a community that will be sustainable now and into the future.

Castlemaine has the warmth and friendliness of a country town, a place where the sense of belonging is strong.  It is a vibrant place of both individuality and a strong sense of community.   Creativity and diversity are celebrated and ideas and projects are shared across the many community groups and stakeholders.  The community both honours the past and looks to the future. It is a place where artists flourish, where the gold rush heritage is treasured, and where leading edge initiatives in environmental sustainability are championed.
Sustainability On Show
Look out for the Carbon Cop as he stilt-walks his beat throughout the Festival!  Armed with batons, a big smile and a tut tut frown, his mission is to create carbon awareness and fun and happiness.
Be prepared - he will be asking people their favourite carbon songs---like "She'll be Carbon round the Mountain"…….
Carbon Cop has a lot to say about waste, saving energy, local food and having fun!  Watch out for his rulings throughout this website.
Team Henderson, alias Carbon Cop, is a renowned entertainer and educator from local Taradale.  Team is a Facilitator of Fun, Minister of Delight, Juggler, clown, musician, stiltwalker, song-writer, and teacher.  He is particularly fascinated with chemistry--especially carbon, and all its isotopes--like diamonds and graphite.  http://www.teamhenderson.com.au/

Maldon's Barry Murfett is almost at the end of a year long project to convert his 1986 BMW to full electric. The decision to convert was made after Barry realised that his greatest emission contributor was his daily commute to Castlemaine and going electric was the only way this could be brought down to near zero.  Barry will have his beloved car on show and be happy to chat at the Don KRC Garden Party at The Botanical Gardens Sunday April 5th .  Look out for the lightning bolt sign
Wash Against Waste is an environmentally friendly alternative to “disposable” crockery and cutlery that reduces waste, is easy to use, hygienic and saves money.   See the Trailer in operation at the Don KRC Garden Party at The Botanical Gardens on Sunday April 5th.

LOCAL SUSTAINABILITY ACTIVITIES AND PLACES TO VISIT

Many people, families, businesses, schools and community groups around Mount Alexander Shire are making the effort to live sustainably.  Here are just a few examples.
Focus on Community is a website presentation of small, local grassroots community development projects aimed to strengthen and empower communities. Many of these projects were developed around a visual or performing arts theme. Many had sustainability as a key theme.  In various ways they are all about creating community sustainability through the weaving together of social, cultural, environmental and economic elements of how we live.   Visit http://www.focusoncommunity.org/index.html
